Microstructural Changes During Short-Term Heat Treatment of Martensitic Stainless Steel—Simulation and Experimental Verification

Abstract Short-term heat treatments of steels are used for tools and cutlery but also the surface treatment a variety other workpieces. If corrosion resistance is required, martensitic stainless like AISI 420L or 420MoV typically used. The influence short-term on different metastable states steel was examined reported in this article. Starting from defined microstructural state, investigated experimentally with help quenching dilatometer computer assisted simulations carried out. With results obtained, simulation model built up which allows to compute changes during be evaluated without need an experiment. As indicator, value martensite start temperature calculated as function holding times at austenitizing temperature. measured by dilatometry compared values. Validation simulated reveals potential optimizing processes provides reliable approach save time, resources energy.
